I can't stress enough on how everybody should be a smart consumer. If you can get the same thing for cheaper, why not? Say you're looking for insurance quotes on home owner policies. Don't just rely on word-of-mouth. Research a bit on what other agencies offer and shortlist from there.
Of course, being a smart consumer shouldn't just cover costs, but also your rights as a consumer. If you think the product sucks, complain so you and others will benefit in the near future. If you think the retailer or company is unscrupulous, report them.
