All I've heard is fabric softener.
Water softening is like water purification, but as I read from Wikipedia, specifically targets the "dissolved" ions like calcium, magnesium and manganese in unsoftened/purified water.
Softened water brings more efficiency, I think, like using less detergent, less lime scale build-up and doesn't hurt your pipes.
Sodium carbonate is used to soften water by exchanging ions. When I read it, it's like a filtering system. I'm not going to go into specifics though. We can all do that on our own.
I always wonder how people think of such solutions. Kinda interesting, really.
