IN BIBLICAL times, it was Noah’s Ark that saved the animals from the Great Flood. Recently, the students of Kolej Damansara Utama (KDU) have taken on the role of animal saviour through their Animal Rights Campaign – ROAR (for Animal Rights).

The campaign, a Public Relations project undertaken by the January and March 2006 Mass Communication Diploma intake students, was held on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Dubbing themselves KDU's ARC (Animal Rights Campaigners), the students aimed to raise awareness of animal preservation and prevention of cruelty through the fund-raising and awareness programme.

“The animals were saved from the floodwaters in Noah’s Ark. We call ourselves KDU’s ARC because our objective is similar – to save the animals from danger,” ROAR head coordinator Benette Lee said after the launch at the college on Tuesday.

Preparation had begun two months prior to the launch, said Lee.

A well-coordinated and impressive effort, the event comprised a video presentation on animals and animal rights, followed by a fire dance performance.

There was also a fashion show entitled Stripped, which featured students parading on the catwalk decked in fabric and body paint resembling an endangered animal, such as the Cuvier's gazelle, desert tortoise and tiger.

The fashion show was aimed at communicating how animals were stripped of their rights to survive, hence its name.

The following day featured performances by local band Seven, and Morning Moon, as well as a fund-raising auction, and talks and workshops by the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).

There was also a flea market within the premises with proceeds from the sale of products to go to the SPCA and WWF – both beneficiaries of the campaign.

“We hope to be able to raise RM1,000 for each beneficiary,” she said.

The first day was great... Loved it.

The second wasn't too happening 'cause there weren't big names to pull ppl in. But the bands were good.
